About the Editions
Founded in 2011, the artist collective MAHKU (Huni Kuin Artist Movement) belongs to the indigenous Huni Kuin people living in the Amazon region of western Brazil. For thousands of years, the life and culture of the Huni Kuin has sprung from a symbiotic relationship with the complex ecosystem that surrounds them. However, with the arrival of the Portuguese colonial power in Brazil at the beginning of the sixteenth century, a history of systematic exclusion, displacement, and exploitation of their land began that continues in the present day. The struggle for their living environment is closely linked to the preservation of the cultural traditions of the Huni Kuin, in which music and collective singing play an important role.
The works on paper presented by Haus der Kunst as part of the group exhibition “Sweat” include two different series by the collective from 2016 (14 works) and 2020 (3 works). The detailed figurative depictions show humans, animals, and nature closely intertwined and tell of a culture and worldview based on equal coexistence. Inspired by the ritual chants of their ancestors, the collective translates words, rhythm, and music into drawings. Their artistic practice - just like their polyphonic song - is generated collectively.
Half of the proceeds from the sale of the edition will go to the artists and the other half will support the exhibition program of Haus der Kunst.
