Koenig Books has a carefully chosen selection of books on art, aesthetic theory, design, graphic design, architecture, photography and fashion, in addition to other articles. The company is based in Cologne. Store branches can be found in the museums of most major German cities, as well as in England, Austria and Italy. A precise assortment of new publications and other books in print accompanies the exhibitions.
The bookstore also has its own publishing house, and, since its establishment in 1969, has often created pioneering works. Nearly 2,500 titles have been published, primarily dedicated to modern and contemporary art, as well as photography, architecture and aesthetic theory. For the last decade most of these publications have appeared as bilingual editions (German/English).
The company's publishing activities focus primarily on artists' books, which are created in close cooperation with the artists themselves - such as Gerhard Richter, Martin Kippenberger, Sigmar Polke and Lawrence Weiner. The publishing house has thus helped to establish the artist's book as an autonomous art form.
Koenig books also carries a wide range of modern, limited edition and remainder international books at a discount and publishes its own series of postcards.
The publishing house will send any books found on its website - http://www.buchhandlung-walther-koenig.de - directly to customers at their request.
