This filmic and sound environment physically reconstructs the demolished country house where Francisco Goya once stayed and painted his legendary Pinturas Negras directly onto the walls. A high-resolution camera shooting 500,000 frames per second filmed in extreme close-up the paintings which are now displayed in Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. The house was reconstructed in three dimensions to find the original acoustics of the place. Through the crackling sounds of a burning torch and the momentary scenes created by light bouncing off the painted surfaces, this science fiction film reflects on the intricate relationship between intermittent images and ghosts of a disappeared space, creating a highly intimate space realm allowing one to travel back in time.

Much like the Marquee series inspired by the brightly lit signage adorning theater entrances, Protomarquee is a visual device that subverts the context of space, by becoming a part of an indoor projection screen, as opposed to being installed on the exterior of a theater. Nearly twenty bulbs of different sizes are fixed behind the screen in order to create a constellation of luminous spots. This lighting device accompanies the screening of films. In the breaks in between each work, commonly referred to as the “intermission”, the lights are turned on alternately creating blinking patterns, all the while integrating into the sequence of light and sound interplaying throughout the room.
