Concert Series Accompanying the Exhibition "ECM – A Cultural Archaeology"

The first major exhibition on the legendary Munich-based record label ECM was accompanied by a concert series featuring renowned performers.
Founded in Munich by Manfred Eicher in 1969, ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) was one of the first record labels in Europe to be headed by musicians. ECM was always more interested in authenticity than in commercial trends and, with its crystal-clear recordings of musicians like Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Jan Garbarek and others, it set new standards in attention to detail and transparency. Rarely has jazz music been so painstakingly recorded. ECM expanded its program in the 1980s to include recordings of contemporary compositions. The early works of Steve Reich and Meredith Monk were formative for ECM’s New Series, but the biggest influence was the work of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. When his album “Tabula Rasa” appeared in 1984, it changed the landscape of new music.

ECM artists include Keith Jarrett, Jan Gabarek, Chick Corea, Tomasz Stanko and Meredith Monk. As part of its New Series, the label publishes works by artists ranging from Perotin and Machaut to contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt, György Kurtág, Giya Kancheli, Steve Reich, and Heiner Goebbels, performed by musicians such as Gidon Kremer, Kim Kashkashian, Thomas Demenga, András Schiff, the Hilliard Ensemble, and many others.
