About this essay
"WORLD[K] IN PROGRESS?" by Joëlle Tuerlinckx is a retrospective presented in three locations, each with a different focus, but united as a whole through the ongoing process of its creation. In her essay, curator Julienne Lorz explores the working methods of the Belgian conceptual artist (born in 1958). In each of her exhibitions, Tuerlinckx directly confronts the conditions she encounters at the exhibition institution, and in its architecture. The show itself thus becomes an artistic medium: An ephemeral and unique work. After it ends, the exhibition may persist in pictures and remnants, but it primarily lingers as a memory; as a retold story and a mental construct that changes with time.
