About this essay

One of the fundamental questions addressed in the exhibition “ECM – A Cultural Archaeology” is how can music be presented in a museum exhibition? The history of the record label ECM – as Okwui Enwezor states in his essay “Big Ears” – should be made comprehensible through more than just documents, archives, and artifacts. A major concern of the exhibition was to present the work of Manfred Eicher and ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) to the public in an appropriate manner, and to show ECM’s relationship to different artistic disciplines. These range from the films of Godard, Theodor Kotullas, and Peter Greenaway to the concerts of Keith Jarrett and The Art Ensemble of Chicago; from the performances by Meredith Monk, Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt, and Codona to the graphic design of Barbara Wojirsch and photographs by Dieter Rehm, Roberto Masotti, Deborah Feingold, and others.
