Concert: Lamentations by William Basinski
William Basinksi is a classically trained musician, who has been working in experimental media for over 30 years in NYC. His compositions express the magnificence of life. The decades-old analogue tapes he works with create a poignant reminder of the inevitability of decay, while his sound transcends the material and stretches our perception of the present with infinite loops of reverberant melodies.
Basinski holds a reputation as the foremost producer of profound meditations on mourning, loss, and dedication that has become his signature interwoven with life-affirming beauty. For Tune, he gives a live performance of his album Lamentations (2020), described by Pitchfork as a “Mise en abyme... a story within a story, a picture within a picture, a reflection trapped between mirrors.” The album title is shared by the biblical poem of exile and loss, and tracks like Paradise Lost accentuate the sentiment of the work. It will be accompanied by a screening of Melancholia: Short Films of James Elaine and William Basinski 1983 — 2003, consisting of four videos – Trailer for 1000 Films, Variations, On a Frontier of Wires and Melancholia (courtesy of LUX, Museolaboratorio – Città Sant’Angelo, Italy).
There will be a film screening and a following Artist Talk with William Basinksi on 6.3.22 at 4 pm. Admission is free of charge with the concert ticket.
