Event overview

As the first guest of the new jointly-developed exchange program between Haus der Kunst and the Goethe Institute, Ayako Bertolli, director of the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute (NCAI), will provide insights into East Africa’s contemporary art scene. Based on figurative paintings and sculptures by East African artists on view in the exhibition, Ayako Bertolli will look at the artist’s work and influences that are present in the room “Mwili Akili na Roho”.  She will trace developments and central trends in contemporary art in the region from the 1960s to early 2000s.

Ayako Bertolli is the director of the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute (NCAI), an exhibition institution founded by Michael Armitage in Nairobi in 2020; it is committed to the exploration and promotion of contemporary art in East Africa.In addition to exhibitions and programming NCAI is in the process of creating an extensive archive on the history of East African artist and establish an Art library.
