As part of the TUNE programme, William Basinski will give two concerts at Haus der Kunst. The first one will focus on his album Lamentations (2020) whilst the second one presents A shadow in time (2017). On Saturday afternoon, there will be an artist talk and a screening of Melancholia: The Short Films of James Elaine and William Basinski, courtesy of LUX (Museolaboratorio - Città Sant’Angelo, Italy).
William Basinski is a classically trained musician and composer who has been working in experimental media for over 30 years in NYC and most recently, California. Born in Texas, he studied saxophone and composition at university in the 1970s, before developing his own musical style using vintage analogue tape loops. His long form mesmerising compositions are both stunning and haunting, and bring forth the magnificence of time and life. The decades-old analogue tapes he works with create a poignant reminder of the inevitability of decay, while the sublime nature of his sound transcends the material and stretches our perception of the present with infinite loops of drifting reverberant melodies.
The Disintegration Loops, one of his most famous releases and now a classic in the ambient genre, was recorded in 2001 at the time of the September 11th tragedy, which Basinski witnessed from his rooftop in Brooklyn and has since dedicated the album to the victims. It established Basinski’s reputation as the foremost producer of profound meditations on mourning, loss, and dedication that has become his signature, interwoven with life-affirming beauty.
In A Shadow In Time (2017), Basinski plunges deeper than ever for the plaintive, solitary eulogy to David Bowie, aptly titled For David Robert Jones. Conversely, the title track, A Shadow In Time, is a subtle, celestial escalation of melody and drone. The result is one of the most truly transcendent pieces of music he has ever committed to – or wrung from – tape.
