This edition of TUNE orbits around the work of the prolific percussionist Valentina Magaletti, known for both her diverse collaborations and distinctive solo work. On Friday evening, Haus der Kunst presents Estradas by Nídia and Valentina, an exciting new collaboration between Magaletti and the Afro-Portuguese electronic producer and DJ, and long-term affiliate of Lisbon’s Príncipe label. On Saturday evening London trio Moin, composed of Joe Andrews and Tom Halsted of the band Raime, and Valentina Magaletti, will perform material from their latest album You Never End and other releases. They will be joined by a fourth live member Allen Wootton.

Estradas by Nídia and Valentina brings together two artists who have an innate understanding of rhythm and how to make your body move. Nídia’s syncopated drum patterns and Valentina’s explorative percussions are interwoven with pulsating marimba lines, Afrobeat guitar riffs and cool electronics. Both have an inventive approach to their work, bringing different elements together. While Valentina explores texture and teases out sounds from different instruments, Nídia combines Angolan kuduro’s intoxicating attitude and melodic tarraxinha with hints of house, techno and hip-hop. They meet in the middle of their respective crafts and from the minute the first track starts, a track called Andiamo which means “let’s go!”, you are immediately drawn in and propelled forward.

Italy-born, and London based, Valentina is a drummer and multi-instrumentalist and has described her compositions before as an unfolding narrative, with stories that eschew spoken language in favour of rhythm, pulse, and vibration. Her versatile technique, which can incorporate anything from vibes and marimba to contact microphones and found objects, results in a style that is forever evolving. She has also worked on a wide range of collaborations, moving easily between alternative and mainstream worlds of music, with artists Thurston Moore, Philip Selway (Radiohead), Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine), Mica Levi and Nicholas Jaar to name just a few.

Nídia is an internationally acclaimed Afro-Portuguese electronic producer and DJ. A key figure of the Príncipe Discos record label based in Lisbon, she has played a decisive role, both as an individual and within the community, in bringing inspiringly progressive aesthetics and ethics to the alternative dance scene across the globe, and the kuduro culture in particular. She has many acclaimed releases and as well as her distinctive dance floor focussed work, her album Não Fales Nela Que a Mentes is more meditative and introspective. She has worked on many collaborations including remixing both Yaeji and Kelela, and contributing production on Fever Ray’s Plunge LP, for which she received a Grammi (Sweden’s music industry awards akin to the US Grammys).
