Info
The fifth edition of Super BOOKS will take place on 2. & 3.11.24. This annual independent art publishing fair brings together nearly 70 artists, designers, publishers, institutions, and universities to present their latest productions at Haus der Kunst.
Super BOOKS focuses on publications that question and rethink the boundaries of books as a medium, and which feature themes, formats, and techniques that are constantly expanding. Advocating the ethics of accessibility, which is practiced through pricing and direct distribution, alternative publishing forms a counterweight to the conventional format of the publishing market.
Super BOOKS was initiated in 2019 as part of the exhibition „Archives in Residence - AAP Archive Artist Publications“ at Haus der Kunst and has since become an important platform for the independent art publishing community. The great public interest over the years shows how much the event resonates with a broad audience and inspires lively engagement with artist publications.
Exhibitors
In addition to the focus on Munich, this year’s exhibitors come from 22 cities, including Vienna, Zagreb, Montreuil, Venice, Madrid, and Amsterdam, enriching the international diversity of the book fair. One-third of the exhibitors are participating in Super BOOKS for the first time, including multimedia artist Andrés Aizicovich with El Flasherito, a collaborative art project for critical writing based in Buenos Aires, the independent art and publishing collective 51 Personae from Shanghai and Three Star Books from Paris, who produce with international contemporary artists.
Additionally, the prestigious Prix Bob Calle for artist books will be presented at Super BOOKS in Munich. Founded in 2017 in honor of Parisian art collector and patron Bob Calle, the prize celebrates the diversity and freedom of artist books. For the first time in Germany, Laurence Dumain Calle will showcase a selection of the nominated and awarded publications at Haus der Kunst.
Programme
Alongside the presentations, visitors can enjoy a diverse programme. Radio 80000, a non-commercial online radio station from Munich, will set up a live studio at Haus der Kunst designed by artist and musician Manuela Illera. From there, they will broadcast the sound of Radio 80000 and stream experimental performances by Raúl Hidalgo (apa Press, Paris) and Bas Fontein and Louis Reith (Dutch Independent Art Book Publishers, Amsterdam). A discussions on artificial intelligence will address current influences on the artist book scene.
On both days, visitors can get creative in workshops with the teams from pirat:innenpresse and Radio 80000. For a dynamic start to the second day of Super BOOKS, Peggy Rudolph, yoga instructor and volunteer at Haus der Kunst, invites attendees to a „Morning Stretching“ session.
Super BOOKS is a cooperative project between Haus der Kunst, AAP Artist Publications Archive, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Akademie der Bildenden Künste München, and Kunsthochschule Kassel. It is curated by Sabine Brantl (Haus der Kunst) with Hubert Kretschmer (AAP Artist Publications Archive) and Lilian Landes (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek).
