BLACKNESS & CINEMA
Summer open air cinema screening as part of the exhibition "Theaster Gates. Black Chapel"

In his hometown of Chicago, Theaster Gates is reknown not only as an artist and archivist of Black culture, but also as an activist who works with the Rebuild Foundation, which he founded to improve the quality of life of his community. Among the public events he organizes are summer open-air cinema screenings. Inspired by this, Haus der Kunst is hosting a three-day film series on its terrace, in which many of the central themes of Gates’ multifaceted installation “Black Chapel” are echoed: the experiences of structural racism; the transformative power of Black music; and the representation of Black women. By building upon Gates’ installation, the film selection considers the spirit of a project that emphasizes the presence of strong, life-affirming Black figures and celebrates the everyday culture of the Black community. In light of the newly emerging conflicts in the US and beyond, this desire to clearly demonstrate structural and internalized racism without falling back upon media recitations of ‘Black suffering’ has taken on a renewed sense of urgency.

Day 1: LOVE & RACE

Theaster Gates: Dance of Malaga (2019), 20 Min., OV
This short film pays homage to the former residents of Malaga Island and reflects upon love, culture and race in America. Dance scenes under the trees of Malaga are interposed with historical film quotes and singing. The work is accompanied by a musical commentary by the Black Monks.
Choreography: Kyle Abraham

Melina Matsoukas: Queen & Slim (2019), 132 Min., Original with German subtitles, FSK 12
After their first date, Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) are stopped by a police officer. The situation escalates and Slim shoots the policeman in self-defense. After the media labels the two as ‘police killers’ and a search for them begins, Queen and Slim have no other choice but to flee and go underground. Here they receive support from unexpected individuals and become a symbol of resistance. This highly acclaimed work by Melina Matsoukas deals with issues of structural racism, police violence and social injustice, thus reflecting the current racial imbalances and the associated “Black Lives Matter” protests in America.
