4 pm | Jana Winderen. Artist Lecture and Listening Session
Jana Winderen presents a performance, a lecture and listening session, as well as a sound installation of her performance in the auditorium of Haus der Kunst.
The artist from Oslo centres the awe-inspiring sound of the natural world and in particular soundscapes that are challenging for humans to access – deep underwater, hidden in ice, or in frequency ranges beyond our hearing. She performs her sound recordings and creates impressive sound installations and environments with a hope to promote a new understanding of immersive listening, not only in remote locations but also in our everyday lives.
Winderen's work focuses on sound and knowledge to raise awareness of our society's environmental challenges. She offers a unique opportunity to listen closely to underwater inhabitants of specific regions and reflects on how human activities affect life in water and on land. In doing so, she makes audible the pervasive presence of human-created sounds in the ocean.
Field trips are an essential part of Winderen's work. For her project Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone for Sonic Acts, she travelled to the North Pole, the Barents Sea, Kirkenes and Nikel. As Artist-in-Residence with TBA21–Academy aboard a ship for her project Silencing of the Reefs, she recorded in the Dominican Republic, Belize, Panama, and Iceland. She undertook multiple journeys to Iceland, Greenland, and Norway for the release on Touch, Energy Field. In the project Through the Bones, she visited fishing communities in Thailand.
Other recent works include The Blue Beyond, released by Touch and supported by Audemars Piguet, and this year, Apple TV+ released the documentary series Earthsounds featuring Winderen’s recordings of walruses, bearded seals and ice from both under and over water. She also recently opened a brand new sound installation, made in collaboration with Tony Myatt, called The River at the Natural History Museum in London featuring recordings from the depths of the River Thames.
On Friday evening, Jana Winderen will perform Absent Voices live at the Auditorium for TUNE. This live 10-channel audio performance is based on her recordings from the depths of water and the darkness of the night – from the tropics to the Arctic Ocean, from the shore to far out at sea, and also close to her studio North of Oslo. Over the past 20 years, she has met a wide range of creatures and weather conditions. Following the performance, it will remain as a sound installation in the Auditorium until 24.11.24, preserving an echo of the hidden voices from the depths.
On Saturday, she invites audiences to join her in the Englischer Garten from 4 pm for a live listening session and lecture. In case of bad weather, the event will take place in the auditorium.
Remaining tickets for the performance on Friday, 25.10.24, are available at the box office.
