6.30 pm | Anansi’s Web. Talk
ECHOES begins on Saturday evening with a talk by Curtly Thomas and Nelta Kasparian who introduce their project Anansi’s Web. The multimedia archive, to which their Saturday night performance Dimanche belongs, explores contemporary manifestations of Caribbean culture’s oral and shape-shifting traditions. In their talk, they will discuss Calypso music, a genre full of hidden and double meanings, that directly influenced contemporary music genres such as hip-hop. They will also explore how carnival archetypes such as Jab Jab, Baby Doll, and Midnight Robber have shape-shifted into modern day icons such as Niki Minaj, Sexxy Red, and Playboi Carti.
7.30 pm | Invernomuto. Listening Session
We continue the investigation of shape-shifting with the launch of a new project by Invernomuto, an interdisciplinary artist duo known for their innovative sound exploration and in-depth research projects that blur the boundaries between fact and fiction. Their listening session blends ancient myth and contemporary technology, transmitted through sound, image and text offering a first glimpse into their new project Triton. This work attempts to establish a connection with a beautiful and rare species of amphibians inhabiting a former ceremonial site on top of a mountain in Northern Italy.
The project Triton by Invernomuto is produced with Haus der Kunst München and made possible thanks to the Italian Council program (2024).
8.45 pm | Sarah Friend. Performance Lecture
Following this thread, artist and software developer Sarah Friend will present a new “choose your own adventure” performance lecture, in which the audience interaction shapes the narrative outcomes. Friend finds inspiration in the weird phenomena of social media. Equal parts video and live performance, she impersonates her AI character, taking the audience on a whirlwind tour of art history through the lens of generative AI. The performance offers an existential twist on the canned communication of bots, avatars and other minor demons.
To actively participate in Sarah Friend’s performance, please bring your own smartphone.
10 pm | Suutoo. DJ set
10.30 pm | Anansi's Web. Performance
Taking the roleplay further, the evening culminates with a spectacular parade of Caribbean ghost/healers, devised by Anansi’s Web. Born out of Curtly Thomas and Nelta Kasparian's passionate research into legendary carnival characters, Dimanche gathers an impressive group of collaborators, including DJ Suutoo with a warm-up set and costume by fashion icon Nasir Mazhar and styling by Taylor Thoroski. Blending cues from hip hop and the late 1980s Dimanche Gras Calypso competitions, Anasis’s Web activates a ceremonial space that invites you to dance with the devil.
The performance by Anansi‘s Web is co-produced with Roskilde Festival.
Tickets will be available soon.
