Info
Delia Betraiz, who performs under the name DEBIT, uses the latest technologies to breathe new life into forgotten instruments. On her album The Long Count she uses machine learning to create digital instruments that play lost Mayan music. During her research in the archives of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, she sampled pre-Hispanic wind instruments and fed them into a machine learning algorithm to reimagine their sounds. The result is a sprawling ambient soundscape of unfamiliar frequencies, oozing whistles, hypnagogic bass, and drone sounds. The album takes its title from the Mesoamerican Long Count calendarwhich is non-linear and was used by the Mayans to predict the beginnings and endings of time periods across history. DEBITs fantastic music and also marks the beginning of something new, without giving up the old.
The performance is part of ECHOES, a live programme of performances. It takes place over the three days of 21-23.7.23.
