Event overview
‘Afrotopes’ is an analytical concept introduced by Huey Copeland and Krista Thompson to analyze subjects that determine the aesthetics of the African Diaspora. Afrotopes refers to a visual language of a form that has become central to the formation of a black consciousness as well as the culture and identity of the black diaspora.
The open seminar will focus on the exploration of El Anatsui’s practice and related artistic positions in West Africa in an attempt to develop alternative models for art theory and practice. It will also analyze socio-political conditions and historical developments in Nigeria, the adopted home of the Ghanaian artist. The seminar is open to all interested visitors.
