Philippe Parreno revolutionised the experience of exhibitions. He transforms galleries into choreographed spaces that follow a script, where all artworks are interconnected while a series of unexpected and interdependent events unfold. The exhibition “Voices” elaborates on Parreno’s long-term approach to the oscillation of reality and the fluid nature of being. Parreno will transform the spaces of Haus der Kunst into a science fiction landscape in constant flux, where visitors can sense the imminent arrival of something that is not yet present within the galleries. Parreno’s new organism acquires its form through temperature shifts, light, moving image, and the language ∂A as its communicating medium within our realm.

The pivotal element of “Voices,” which culminates the 2024 theme of languages at Haus der Kunst, is the development of ∂A, a new language spoken by ARD anchor woman Susanne Daubner (Tagesschau). ∂A has been conceived by the artist himself, and it is constantly evolving through machine learning when it weaves together all the elements Parreno assembles in the exhibition rooms as they unfold in a constant, ever-evolving relation to one another, acquiring different roles and meanings, oscillating between absence and intense presence.

“Voices” has been co-programmed with Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul (28.2.–7.7.24). Two coordinated yet different exhibitions share co-commissioned works, a book collecting all voice-related texts by Philippe Parreno, a catalogue, and an overarching concept of cooperation across continents, cultures, and languages. In conjunction with the respective exhibitions, Haus der Kunst and Leeum Museum of Art present “Voices,” the first transcription collection comprising various voices in artworks by Philippe Parreno, written by the artist between 1990 and 2021.

The exhibition receives support from the Ulli und Uwe Kai-Stiftung.
