"Improvise NOW!!!" is a yearlong program of concerts, performances, talks, symposia and screenings that explore the intersection of improvisation and abstraction through electronic, digital, analog and vocal processes. It focuses on the dynamic connection between music and art, literature, poetry, film, dance and theater and culminates with an exhibition on FMP, the legendary Berlin-based record label and radical jazz avatar.
"Improvise NOW!!!" will begin the weekend of April 29 and 30, combining concerts, lectures and podium discussions creating hybrid infectious exchanges. The initial weekend explores similarities and apparent contradictions in the practice and theory of improvisation and reassesses its significance. By renegotiating the importance of improvisation as a practice across all fields of music and other related forms of cultural production, "Improvise NOW!!!" puts improvisation into a wider historical context and interconnects international spheres of contemporary practice.
"Improvise NOW!!!" is a collaboration between the Goethe-Institut and Haus der Kunst; it takes place in the context of the "Goethe-Institut Fellowship at Haus der Kunst", an innovative research residency program in Munich. For the series "Improvise NOW!!!", the cooperation has been expanded, allowing important international positions to be presented in collaboration with the global network of the 160 Goethe-Institutes. At the same time, the joint effort also allows the presentation of the Berlin record label FMP in numerous locations outside Germany.
