Michael Armitage. Paradise Edict 04.09.20 — 14.02.21
The British-Kenyan painter Michael Armitage (born 1984 in Nairobi, Kenya) has quickly become one of the most exciting young painters in contemporary art. In his large-format, saturated oil paintings, he refers to both East African and European painting traditions. He works on the cloth-like material lubugo, which locates his painting in the East African region. His powerful pictures are an expression of essential aspects of being human: cruelty, sexuality, love, as well as mythologies and dream states. As an homage, a room is dedicated to circa 70 works by East African artists.
Archive Gallery 2020/21 - Archives in Residence: euward Archive 18.09.20 — 25.04.21
Since 2000, the Munich Augustinum Foundation has been awarding the euward - the only art prize of international standing for art in the context of intellectual disabilities. As part of the "Archives in Residence" series, the euward archive is a guest at the Haus der Kunst and makes part of its holdings publicly available for the first time. Documents, photographs and audiovisual media tell of versatile talents and passions, but also of injuries and the struggle for recognition. The presentation is an invitation to discuss our ideas of inclusive culture and diverse society anew.
DER ÖFFENTLICHKEIT - VON DEN FREUNDEN HAUS DER KUNST Kapwani Kiwanga. Plot 09.10.20 — 25.04.21
The seventh edition of the series DER ÖFFENTLICHKEIT – VON DEN FREUNDEN HAUS DER KUNST is dedicated to the Canadian artist Kapwani Kiwanga (b. 1978 in Hamilton, Canada; lives and works in Paris). Kiwanga’s practice traces the pervasive impact of power asymmetries by placing historic narratives in dialogue with contemporary realities, the archive, and tomorrow’s possibilities. Her project at Haus der Kunst is conceived of an ever-changing series of artistic interventions and events in three “acts”, staged across the entire run of the installation.
Cyrill Lachauer. I am not sea, I am not land - Sammlung Goetz in Haus der Kunst 23.10.20 — 11.04.21
Cyrill Lachauer develops his extensive projects on long trips, immersing himself deeply in the local cultures of the respective locations. In his new work "I am not sea, I am not land" he deals with the ideas and perceptions of land and landscape. The exhibition opens with a film projection of a sequence edited by the artist from the film "Man of Aran" from 1934. A wind-whipped sea makes it impossible to draw a clear boundary between mainland and ocean. In what follows, Lachauer takes us to dances and mountains, to diamond seekers and hobos. They all share the fate of border crossers.
